Boy, Officer & Squirrel

A policeman caught a nasty little boy with a penknife in one hand and a squirrel in the other.

"Now listen here," the policeman said, "Whatever yo do to that poor, defenseless creature I shall personally do to you"

"In that case," said the boy, "I'll kiss 'im and let 'im go"

The Camel Joke

There's this guy walking along a road to town with his camel. Along the way, a guy stops and ask's if he needs a ride to town. The guy sez, "Yeah," and hops in. The driver asks "What about your camel?"

The guy replies, "Oh, he's okay... he knows his way to town."

So the driver start's driving, gets up to about 45 MPH, looks in his rearview mirror and sees the camel right behind him. He sez to the guy, "Hey buddy ya know your camel is behind us?

The guy replies, "Yeah it's okay, he knows his way to town. Speed up a little."

The driver speeds up to about 55 MPH, he's driving along, and look's behind him and again see's the camel. He sez to the guy, "Your camel is still there."

The guy replies, "Really it's okay, he knows his way to town. Speed up a little."

So the driver speeds up to 65 MPH. He drives for a bit, look's behind him, then looks at the guy and says, "Hey buddy your camel, he's looking pretty rough."

The guy replies, "Oh yeah? What's he doing?"

The driver sez, "Well, his ear's are folded back and his tongue is hanging out."

The guy replies, "His tongue is hanging out? Which side?"

The driver sez, "The left side."

The guy replies, "You'd better hold your course... he's fixin to pass ya!"

The Toilet Brush

Tom, Dick and Harry were in the pub enjoying a few quiet drinks one night, when they decided to get in on the weekly raffle.

They bought five $1 tickets each, seeing it was for charity.

The following week, when the raffle was drawn, they each won a prize.

Tom won the first prize - a whole year's supply of gourmet spaghetti sauce.

Dick was the winner of the second prize - six month's supply of extra-long gourmet spaghetti.

And Harry won the sixth prize - a toilet brush.

When they met in the pub a week later, Harry asked the others how they were enjoying their prizes.

"Great," said Tom. "I love spaghetti."

"So do I," said Dick. "And how's the toilet brush, Harry?"

"Not so good," Harry said, "I reckon I'll go back to paper..."

DATING (Outside the Family)

1. Always offer to bait your date's hook, especially on the first date.

2. Be aggressive. Let her know you're interested: "I've been wanting to go out with you since I read that stuff on the bathroom wall two years ago."

3. Establish with her parents what time she is expected back. Some will say 10:00 PM; Others might say "Monday." If the latter is the answer, it is the man's responsibility to get her to school on time.

THEATER ETIQUETTE

1. Crying babies should be taken to the lobby and picked up immediately after the movie has ended.

2. Refrain from talking to characters on the screen. Tests have proven they can't hear you.

WEDDINGS

1. Livestock, usually, is a poor choice for a wedding gift.

2. Kissing the bride for more than 5 seconds may get you shot.

3. For the groom, at least, rent a tux. A leisure suit with a cummerbund and a clean bowling shirt can create a tacky appearance.

4. Though uncomfortable, say "yes" to socks and shoes for this special occasion.

DRIVING ETIQUETTE

1. Dim your headlights for approaching vehicles; Even if the gun is loaded, and the deer is in sight.

2. When approaching a four-way stop, the vehicle with the largest tires always has the right of way.

3. Never tow another car using panty hose and duct tape.

4. When sending your wife down the road with a gas can, it is impolite to ask her to bring back beer.

5. Do not lay rubber while traveling in a funeral procession.

Essential Disk Care Guide

- Never leave diskettes in the drive, as the data can leak out of the disk and corrode the inner mechanics of the drive.

- Diskettes should be rolled up and stored in pencil holders.

- Diskettes should be cleaned and waxed once a week. Microscopic metal particles may be removed by waving a powerful magnet over the surface of the disk. Any stubborn metal shavings can be removed with scouring powder and steel wool. When waxing a diskette, make sure the surface is even. This will allow the diskette to spin faster, resulting in better access time.

- Do not fold diskettes unless they do not fit into the drive. "Big" Diskettes may be folded and used in "Little" drives.

- Never insert a diskette into the drive upside down. The data can fall off the surface of the disk and jam the intricate mechanics of the drive.

- Diskettes cannot be backed up by running them through a photo copy machine. If your data is going to need to be backed up, simply insert TWO diskettes into your drive. Whenever you update a document, the data will be written onto both disks.

- A handy tip for more legible backup copies: Keep a container of iron filings at your desk. When you need to make two copies, sprinkle iron filings liberally between the diskettes before inserting them into the drive.

- Diskettes should not be removed or inserted from the drive while the red light is on or flashing. Doing so could result in smeared or possibly unreadable text.

- Occasionally, the red light remains flashing in what is known as a "hung" or "hooked" state. If your system is hooking, you will probably need to insert a few coins before being allowed to access the slot.

- If your diskette is full and needs more storage space, remove the disk from the drive and shake vigorously for two minutes. This will pack the data enough (data compression) to allow for more storage. Be sure to cover all openings with scotch tape to prevent loss of data.

- Data access time may be greatly improved by cutting more holes in the diskette jacket. This will provide more simultaneous access points to the disk.

- Periodically spray diskettes with insecticide to prevent system bugs from spreading.

Dear God

Oh.. Dear God

Yesterday was an awful day for me..

My husband ran off with his secretary.
My son pierced his eyebrow.
My daughter tattooed the bald spot on her head.
My dog mated with the neighbours cat.
My neighbour sold her house to a mental institution.
My Mom told me I was adopted.
My boss told me I was laid off.
My sister was arrested for prostitution.
My house has termites.
My car was stolen.
All that came in the mail was bills.
A plane crash landed on my garage.
OJ Simpson came to my door selling rug cleaner.
And my TV blew.

Lord, please be with me today.

I was able to live through all that misery yesterday. And I will be able to make it through anything today!

But please.... DON'T LET ANYTHING HAPPEN TO MY COMPUTER!

High insulin level linked to breast cancer

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Elevated insulin levels in the blood appear to increase the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, researchers in New York said.

Increased breast cancer risk for postmenopausal women previously has been linked to obesity and diabetes, researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University said.

Both conditions involve insulin resistance, which causes increases in circulating levels of insulin. Insulin promotes cell division and breast tumor growth in animal models, so the researchers reasoned that elevated insulin levels could contribute to breast cancer risk in women, said their study, published in the International Journal of Cancer.

"Up to now, only a few studies have directly investigated whether insulin levels are associated with breast cancer risk, and those studies have yielded conflicting results," Geoffrey Kabat, a senior epidemiologist at Einstein said.

Kabat's team analyzed data on 5,450 women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative, a study investigating the influence of a number of factors on women's health.

The researchers found women in the upper third for insulin levels were more than twice as likely to develop breast cancer when compared with women in bottom third for insulin levels.

CPR to be taught via Nintendo Wii game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI) -- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation soon could be taught using the Nintendo Wii video game console, students at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, said.

The American Heart Association has pledged $50,000 to fund the work by biomedical engineering students, the university said in a release Thursday.

Greg Walcott, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, devised the idea of a computer program that could be downloaded on home computers and synched with the wireless technology of the Wii remote to teach users proper resuscitation technique.

The students plan to make the program available, free of charge, on the American Heart Association Web site as early as this fall.

"The Heart Association's high interest in our students' innovations points to potential of this project and how it fits in with its desire to deliver reliable CPR education to the masses," faculty adviser Jack Rogers said.

New monkey subspecies found in Brazil

NEW YORK (UPI) -- The Wildlife Conservation Society says a new subspecies of monkey has been discovered in a remote region of the Amazon in Brazil.

The organization said the monkey is related to saddleback tamarins, which include several species of monkeys known for their distinctively marked backs. The new subspecies was first seen by scientists on a 2007 expedition into the state of Amazonas in northwestern Brazil.

Researchers have dubbed the monkey Mura's saddleback tamarin (saguinus fuscicollis mura) after the Mura Indians, the ethnic group of Amerindians of the Purus and Madeira river basins where the monkey lives.

Biologists said the monkey is mostly gray and dark brown in color, with a distinctly mottled "saddle." It weighs less than three-quarters of a pound and is 9 inches tall with a 12.6-inch tail.

"This newly described monkey shows that even today there are still major wildlife discoveries to be made," said the study's lead author, Fabio Rohe of the Wildlife Conservation Society. "This discovery should serve as a wake-up call that there is still so much to learn from the world's wild places, yet humans continue to threaten these areas with destruction."

The discovery was reported in the June online edition of the International Journal of Primatology.

Simulated 105-day Mars mission ends

MOSCOW (UPI) -- A crew of six people Tuesday completed a 105-day simulated Mars mission, the European Space Agency said.

The crew left a special isolation facility in Moscow for the first time since March 31, ending an experiment that was part of the Mars500 program that will help scientists better understand the psychological and medical aspects of long spaceflights.

The crew included two ESA crew members: Oliver Knickel, a mechanical engineer in the German army, and Cyrille Fournier, an airline pilot from France. The remaining four were Russians: cosmonauts Sergei Ryazansky and Oleg Artemyev, Alexei Baranov, a medical doctor, and Alexei Shpakov, a sports physiologist.

"We have successfully completed our mission," said Knickel. "This is a big accomplishment that I am very proud of. I hope that the scientific data we have provided over the last months will help to make a mission to Mars possible."

During the isolation the crew faced a range of scenarios as if they really were traveling to Mars, including simulated emergencies, while coping with a communication delay of up to 20 minutes each way. The experiments were proposed by research institutes in Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands and Russia, as well as in the United States.

The study is the precursor to a simulation of a full 520-day mission to Mars and back, which is to start early next year.

HOW THINGS MOVE-POSITION, VELOCITY, AND ACCELERATION

"To understand motion is to understand nature." -Leonardo da Vinci

One of physics' first problems was extremely practical: at what angle should you launch a cannonball to hit a particular target? Certainly this doesn't sound as grand or sophisticated as analyzing the whole universe, but it does fit nicely with chemistry's roots: attempting to turn base metals into gold. Cannons came into the picture when people went after someone else's gold.

Although physics' early history is rich in characters and their stories, we will focus here on motion from a more modern perspective. Not only does motion form the basis of much of physics' later developments, but it also has a direct connection to human experience. We are surrounded by moving things and experience a great deal of personal motion-even it it's not always in the right direction.

Let's start with the simplest motion first.

Motion Along a Line (one-dimensional motion)

Suppose you live on a road that runs straight east and west. A dog sitting on your road could be located by how far it is from your house. Since physics uses the metric system, the dog might be found, say, 39 meters (almost 130 feet) east of your house. This is called the dog's position. Graphically, the street is represented by a single line, called the x-axis, and your house is located at the origin. East is conventionally regarded as positive and west as negative.

dog position

If a body changes its position, that change is called a displacement. Representing this mathematically, the earlier position is called [x.sub.1]/1, read as x sub 1, while the later position is [x.sub.2], and the displacement is [x.sub.2]- [x.sub.1], represented by [delta]x, read delta x.

To summarize conceptually and mathematically, and including units:

Displacement is the change in an object's position. [delta]x = [x.sub.2] - [x.sub.1]

The meter is a convenient unit for length measurement since the height of most humans is between 1.5 m (5 ft) and 2 m (6 ft 7 in), the length of a normal stride is almost 1 m (3 ft), and a stack of forty books like this one would be 1 m (3 ft) tall.

For example, if the dog moved from its 39 m spot to a position 51 m (170 ft) east of your house, the dog's displacement would be 51 m - 39 m = 12 m.

dog displacement

Next, the elapsed time must be taken into account. The velocity of a body tells how fast a body's position is changing.

Velocity is the distance traveled by a body divided by the time required to travel it.

v = [delta]x/[delta]t units = meters/seconds = m/s

A velocity of 1 m/s (3 ft/s) corresponds to a leisurely stroll (Frankenstein set this standard), while 10 m/s (30 ft/s) is achieved by 100 m (100 yd) dash champions. Your flying disc tosses are usually somewhere between 3 and 10 m/s, as you found in Experiment 1. Speed and velocity are used interchangeably in linear motion, but in two- or three-dimensional motion, there is an important difference-and that is direction.

Velocity is such an integral feature of modern life that automobiles have a device to measure their speed directly, the speedometer. The speedometer's units (miles/hr = mph or km/hr) differ from the scientific standard m/s, but the conversion is quite simple: 60 mph is about 100 km/hr or almost 30 m/s (44 ft/s). Riding in a car at speeds of 0 to 30 m/s seems pretty ordinary, but some bodies travel a lot slower. For example, human hair grows at a few centimeters per month and currents in the Earth's mantle cause earthquakes by dragging crustal plates at a speed of a few centimeters per year. Much faster speeds are also possible: passenger jets fly more than 200 m/s (600 ft/s); the fastest airplane travels at 3,000 m/s (9,000 ft/s); Earth's motion around the sun requires 30,000 m/s (90,000 ft/s); and the ultimate speed is that of light, 300 million m/s (900 million ft/s).

Returning to the example of our friendly dog, if it takes the pooch 4 seconds to travel from 39 m to 51 m, his velocity is 12 m / 4 s = 3 m/s (9 ft/s). This is only an average velocity, since the dog might have run the first 5 meters in 1 second, taken 1 second for a bark break, then run the last 7 meters in 2 seconds.

dog velocity

Next, what about the case where the velocity changes? The rate of change of a body's velocity is called acceleration.

Acceleration is the change in a body's velocity divided by the time required to change it.

a = [delta]v/[delta]t Units = meters/sec/sec = m/[s.sup.2]

Speeding up yields a positive acceleration, while slowing down makes the acceleration negative. Perhaps that's why the gas pedal on your car is called the accelerator. But why isn't the brake called a decelerator? (a mystery we won't solve here).

A value of 1 m/[s.sup.2] is a mild acceleration corresponding to having your car accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 28 seconds. (That's not much of a jackrabbit start, but it's easy on gas.) A world's record 0 to 60 mph acceleration is approximately 10 m/[s.sup.2], about the same acceleration as a dropped object near the Earth's surface falling because of gravity. That special acceleration of freely falling bodies is called the acceleration due to gravity and given the symbol g. For calculations, g = 9.8 m/[s.sup.2] is used. Humans have built-in limitations on the amount of acceleration we can stand. Blackouts and possible internal damage can occur with accelerations much beyond 60 m/[s.sup.2] (also called 6 g's because it is 6 times the acceleration due to gravity).

If our friendly dog travels at 3 m/s, then is observed 5 seconds later traveling 6 m/s, it accelerated at a rate of (6 m/s - 3 m/s)/5 s = 0.6 m/[s.sup.2].

dog acceleration

Combining the position, velocity, and acceleration in a slightly different way.

An accelerating body's velocity is changed by an amount equal to the acceleration times the elapsed time.

v = [v.sub.0] + at, where [v.sub.0] = velocity at time = 0

The distance traveled is also affected by acceleration:

The position of an accelerated body is increased by its velocity times the elapsed time plus half the acceleration times the elapsed time squared.

x = [x.sub.0] + [v.sub.0]t + 1/2 [at.sup.2]

where [x.sub.0] and [v.sub.0] are the body's position and velocity at time = 0

Another equation may be obtained by eliminating time from the x and v equations:

[v.sub.2] = [v.sub.0.sup.2] + 2a(x - [x.sub.0])

where [x.sub.0] and [v.sub.0] are the body's position and velocity at time = 0

This equation is particularly useful in solving problems in which time is not involved.

Understanding motion along a line is a good start, but it's not enough. Even a dog escapes its straight line occasionally.

Motion in Two or Three Dimensions

Two-dimensional motion in a horizontal plane includes chess pieces moving on a board, a hockey puck slid on the ice, or even a dog running in a flat backyard. The motion's direction has now become important and is sometimes specified in compass cardinal points. Motion in a vertical plane is perhaps more interesting because Earth's gravity pulls everything vertically downward. Examples of this kind of motion encompass not only the classic cannonballs but also movements made in many sports, such as baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis. In principle, analysis of the motion of any of these examples is simple. Dividing the motion into two parts, horizontal (x) and vertical (y), the analytical tools for one-dimensional motion are applied twice, once for each dimension. The resulting path of the ball, called its trajectory, is clearly curved, undoubtedly corresponding to your ball-playing experience.

ball trajectory

Using the equations developed earlier, the range, x, can be found if you know the launch velocity, [v.sub.o], the launch angle, [theta], and the acceleration due to gravity, g. It is:

x = [v.sub.o.sup.2]sin, 2[theta]/g, where sin is the shorthand notation for sine = opposite/hypotenuse

This equation can be solved for the launch angle as a function of the range and launch velocity. Or, knowing the range and angle, you can find the launch velocity, as you saw in Experiment 2. So, could you use this knowledge to become a technical adviser, telling pirates where to aim their cannons, or a caddy for Tiger Woods, advising him on the angle his club should have? Not quite. Other factors are at work besides gravity. In reality, interactions with air make all shots fall short of their expected range or even curve right or left, turning their motion into three-dimensional rather than two-dimensional movement. So, what causes bodies to move? The short answer is: forces. The longer answer is contained in the next chapter.

Experiment 3: Weight 'Til the Sun Shines, Nellie

Equipment needed: spring scale calibrated in newtons and grams and several objects (see table)

The purpose of this experiment is to measure the weight and mass of several household objects so you can become familiar with standard physics units.

Procedure

Hang an object from a spring scale calibrated in newtons (weight) and grams (mass) and record your values in the table below:

Object Weight Mass Mass = (newtons) (grams) grams/1,000 (kilograms)

Bill Gates in Heaven

When Bill Gates died, he went up to Heaven, where Saint Peter showed him to his house, a beautiful 20 room house, with grounds and a tennis court.

Bill Gates was pleased, and spent many months enjoying the amenities of Heaven.

One day, he was enjoying one of Heaven's many fine parks, when he ran into a man dressed in a fine tailored suit.

"That is a nice suit, my friend," said Gates. "Where did you get it?"

"Actually," the man replied, "I was given a hundred of these when I got here. I've been treated really well. I got a mansion on a hill overlooking a beautiful hill, with a huge five-hundred acre estate, a golf course, and three Rolls Royces."

"Were you a Pope, or a doctor healing the sick?" asked Gates.

"No," said his new friend, "Actually, I was the captain of the Titanic."

Hearing this made Gates so angry that he immediately stalked off to find St. Peter.

Cornering Peter, he told him about the man he had just met, saying, "How could you give me a paltry new house, while you're showering new cars, a mansion, and fine suits on the Captain of the Titanic? I invented the Windows operating system! Why does he deserve better??!"

"Yes, but we use Windows," replied Peter, "and the Titanic only crashed once."

Very Drunk

A man stumbles out of a bar one night obviously drunk.

He makes his way down the street knocking into everything in his path.

A police officer watches him from a cruiser across the street.

The man comes up to a parked car, fumbles around in his pockets, gets his keys, and proceeds to drive away.

The police officer, unbelieving what he saw, pulls the man over a few blocks down the road.

The man gives a breathalizer for the officer and to the officer's amazement - the guy was stone cold sober.

"I can't believe it! I watched you walk to this car, drive erratic all the way down the road, and my machine says you have no alcohol in your system! How can that be???"

"Oh that's easy", replies the man. "Tonight I'm the designated decoy."

Ad Space

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) announced that it is selling advertising space in the error messages that appear in Windows.

Acknowledging for the first time that the average user of their operating system encounters error messages at least several times a day, Microsoft is trying to take financial advantage of the unavoidable opportunity to make an ad impression.

"We estimate that throughout the world at any given moment several million people are getting a 'General Protection Fault' or 'Illegal Operation' warning.

We will be able to generate significant revenue by including a short advertising message along with it," said Microsoft marketing director Nathan Mirror.

He also mentioned that Microsoft is intended to add banner ads into its Blue Screen of Death in the near future.

The Justice Department immediately indicated that they intend to investigate whether Microsoft is gaining an unfair advantage in reaching the public with this advertising by virtue of its semi-monopolistic control over error messages.

Molecule detects, treats prostate cancer

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (UPI) -- U.S. scientists say they have developed a prostate cancer "homing device" that could improve detection and allow the first targeted treatment of the disease.

Purdue University researchers said they synthesized a molecule that finds and penetrates prostate cancer cells, and have created imaging agents and therapeutic drugs that can link to the molecule and be carried with it as cargo.

Professor Philip Low, who led the research, said a targeted treatment could be much more effective in treating cancer and would greatly reduce the harmful side effects associated with current treatments.

"Currently, none of the drugs available to treat prostate cancer are targeted, which means they go everywhere in the body as opposed to only the tumor, and so are quite toxic for the patient," Low said. "By being able to target only the cancer cells, we could eliminate toxic side effects of treatments. In addition, the ability to target only the cancer cells can greatly improve imaging of the cancer to diagnose the disease, determine if it has spread or is responding to treatment."

There also is potential for the targeting molecule to be used to attack the vasculature of solid tumors of other types of cancers, Low said.

Two papers detailing the research appeared in the June 1 issue of the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.

Fish was major part of early human diet

ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- A U.S.-led international team of scientists says it has produced the first direct evidence of substantial fish consumption by early modern humans in China.

Erik Trinkaus, a professor at the University of Washington in St. Louis, said freshwater fish are an important part of the global diet, but it has been unclear when they became an important part of the year-round diet for early humans.

The new research indicates that might have occurred in China about 40,000 years ago. The scientists said an analysis of a bone from one of the earliest modern humans in Asia -- the 40,000-year-old skeleton from Tianyuan Cave near Beijing -- showed that individual was a regular fish consumer. It's the first direct evidence for the substantial consumption of aquatic resources by early modern humans in China, they said.

The study appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Canine genes aid human cancer discovery

RALEIGH, N.C. (UPI) -- U.S. scientists say they've discovered a gene believed to be involved in meningiomas tumors might not be as major a factor as previously believed.

North Carolina State University researchers compared human and canine genomes and discovered the gene commonly thought to cause tumors that affect the meninges, or thin covering of the human brain, might not be as important as thought for tumor formation. Humans suffering from meningioma frequently lose one copy of nearly the entire length of human chromosome 22, which consists of nearly 50 million base pairs of DNA that code for more than 500 genes.

"With so much genetic material to consider, one can see why figuring out which genes play a key role in meningiomas is extremely difficult," Professor Matthew Breen, who led the research, said. "By looking at tumors seen in both humans and dogs we have a simple way to narrow the search: we compare the affected areas of a human chromosome with related areas on dog chromosomes.

"This works because dogs and humans are genetically similar and both get the same kinds of cancers," he added. "While we share much of our genetic material, the DNA of a dog is organized differently to our own and this makes it possible to isolate smaller 'shared' regions of genetic data rather than looking at an entire chromosome."

U.S.-Mexico border wall may hurt wildlife

TUCSON (UPI) -- U.S. biologists say the 700-mile security wall under construction along the United States-Mexico border could significantly threaten wildlife.

The scientists said the wall would alter the movement and "connectivity" of wildlife and the animals' potential isolation might be a threat to populations of some species.

But the researchers said technology and design alterations could dramatically improve the potential for animals to move more freely between the two countries.

Oregon State University Assistant Professor Clinton Epps and University of Arizona biologist Aaron Flesch looked at the potential effects of the security wall on two species -- the pygmy o owl and bighorn sheep.

They found some of the potential damage to low-flying pygmy owls could be mitigated by erecting poles near the fence to allow the owls to swoop from a perch, and planting brush to provide better cover to help them avoid predation, Epps said.

The security wall could have a bigger impact on the movement of bighorn sheep, isolating populations and potentially reducing their genetic diversity. But the scientists say a virtual fence in some areas would allow the sheep to travel, especially in steep terrain.

The researchers said other animals might also be affected by the security wall, such as black bears, jaguars, pronghorn antelope, desert tortoises and ground-dwelling birds.

The study appeared in the journal Conservation Biology.

Obama Beri Ucapan Selamat Pada Yudhoyono

Rabu, Juli 15

Around The World: Bellying Up To Brussels!

Jennifer Merin

London is famous for Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, Paris boasts the Eiffel Tower and Arch de Triomphe, and Rome has the remarkable Colosseum and Vatican City.

What do tourists head for first in Brussels? Well, the most celebrated tourist attraction in the sophisticated city that is at the very heart of the European Union is the Mannikin Pis, a 24-inch tall statue of a little boy urinating. Yes, urinating. Imagine that!

Located at Rue du Chene and Rue de l”Etuve, Mannekin Pis has charmed local folk and travelers from afar since the 15th century. Several noteworthy admirers -- Louis XIV and the legions of American troops stationed in Belgium after the end of World War II among them-- have swathed the beloved statue in ornate costumes, many of which are now on display in the Brussels Museum, which is centrally located on the nearby Grand Place.

Despite the comparatively diminutive size and quirky nature of its landmark tourist icon, Brussels is a very sophisticated, extremely important and intoxicatingly charming international hub city.

As headquarters for the European Union (EU) and home base for literally dozens of influential international agencies -- including NATO, UNESCO, UNICEF and the Red Cross -- Brussels serves as the old-worldly capital of the new Europe. It is a city that proudly plays its unique role as the melting pot for contemporary European politics, economy and culture. Everyone is multilingual, speaking Flemish and French as their native tongues and English as a pervasive second or third language -- one that‘s always only an earshot away.

In catering to a full complement of international diplomats, bureaucrats and businessmen, the city provides a more-than-satisfying collection of fine restaurants featuring all sorts of classical, nouvelle and ethnic cuisines. The city’s chic shops display an embarrassment of riches, and Brussels supports a roster of cultural events that is sure to satisfy.

And for those seeking that intoxicating charm, Brussels is a beer taster’s paradise, a haven for those who love a great brew. Beer is Belgium’s favorite beverage and Brussels is the place to imbibe. Grand Place, the city’s historic heart, is widely considered to be one of Europe’s most beautiful squares. With the inspiring Hotel de Ville (Town Hall) and its 298-foot spire dominating one side of the square and several ornate 17th century guild houses lining the other three sides, Grand Place is indeed a scene of true Gothic grandeur.

The cobblestone square, reserved for pedestrian traffic only, is also the setting for nonstop bustling activity. Flower stalls, lace shops, chocolatiers, sidewalk artists and artisans entertain browsers, while outdoor cafes and pubs cater to people who want to do nothing but relax while enjoying watching other people stroll by.

Each evening, particular during the summer months, the square is likely to reverberate with pumped-in classical music. On Sunday mornings, there are birds all atwitter as avian dealers sell canaries and other exotic tropical bird species.

Several museums are on or near Grand Place. The ‘Golden Tree” guild house at No. 10 Grand Place was once the headquarters of Brussels’ brewers. It now houses the Brewery Museum, dedicated to the art of making and drinking beer. Ah, there‘s that tempting Belgian brew again.

The King’s House, across from Town Hall, is the city museum where the Mannekin Pis outfits are displayed, along with superb collections of 18th and 19th century ceramics.

The Museum of Ancient art, housing fine Flemish masters’ works and the Museum of Modern Art, featuring stunning works by Belgian artist Rene Magritte and other surrealists, and by neo-impressionist painters. Both museums are within walking distance of the Grand place.

Also near Grand place, lining Rue des Bouchers (Butchers’ Street) are dozens of superb restaurants-- popular with both locals and tourists -- featuring mussels and other fresh seafood, pheasant. waffles, fried potatoes (the Belgians acutally invented French fries) and other Belgian specialties.

After dining, a Belgian brew is in order. Yes, beer again. Moerder Lambik and other pubs around Grand Place offer an excellent sampling of some of the 400 labels of fine beer brewed in Belgium. 400 labels! No wonder we keep coming back to the subject of beer.

The brewing process is revealed at Van Roy-Cantillon, a family brewery at 56 rue Gheude. The brewery has been family owned and operated since 1900, and little has changed since its founding. It’s a great place to see brewing, bottling, cleaning of the barrels or the making of fruit beers during summer -- depending, of course, on what the workers are doing during the day’s visiting hours. Anyway, the age-old tools of brewers are on display, and there are wonderful samples to sip. All for the admission price of 5 Euros.

A shopping spree along post Avenue Louise introduces you to Europe’s top designers and their latest collections. Beautiful lace and tapestries are also famous Belgian products, and there are hundreds o shops offering them for sale.

While having a stroll around Place Sablon, you’ll find yourself in the very heart of Brussels’ very highly-regarded antiques dealers’ district. On weekends, Place Sablon has an open air flea market featuring everything from antique postcards and prints to art nouveau jewelry to 1960-s bric-a-brac. All of it is easy to pack and bring home. Some of it is affordable.

Speaking of savings, the Brussels Card -- available in 24, 48 or 72 hour denominations -- provides discounts in eateries and shops, plus free admission to museums and unlimited access to public transportation, including local busses that actually are an excellent way to see and get around the city. Priced from 20 Euros for 24 hours, these are excellent buys. There is also a Museums Bus, which is the best way to go from one museum to another.

Watering "Dead" Lawns

A brown lawn isn't necessarily a dead lawn. Grasses go dormant in times of drought, but will quickly return with fall rains. If you have a water shortage let your lawn go dormant and water only once a month.

Mock Orange: Sun or Shade?

Question: I've seen various recommendations for mock orange. Some say it should receive full sun, and others say to plant it in the shade. Which is the best place for it?

Answer: Mock orange (Philadelphus) is reasonably adaptable. It thrives in full sunshine in most gardens but appreciates partial afternoon shade in the hottest climates.

Understanding Fertilizer Labels

Question: What do the three numbers on fertilizer packages mean? For example, 10-10-10.

Answer: The three numbers refer to the percentage of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K) in the fertilizer. These 3 elements are referred to as macronutrients because plants need them in fairly large (i.e., macro) amounts to thrive. Plants also need many micronutrients, but in much smaller quantities. While synthetic fertilizers often contain just N, P, and K, organic ones, such as fish emulsions and seaweed extracts, contain numerous micronutrients, too.

Redneck Logic

Two rednecks decided that they weren't going anywhere in life and thought they should go to college to get ahead.

The first went in to see the counselor, who told him to take math, history, and logic.

"What's logic?" the first redneck asked.

The professor answered, "Let me give you an example. Do you own a weed eater?"

"I sure do."

"Then I can assume, using logic, that you have a yard," replied the professor.

"That's real good!" said the redneck.

The professor continued, "Logic will also tell me that since you have a yard, you also own a house."

Impressed, the redneck said, "Amazing!"

"And since you own a house, logic dictates that you have a wife."

"That's Betty Mae! This is incredible!"

The redneck was catching on.

"Finally, since you have a wife, logically I can assume that you are heterosexual," said the professor.

"You're absolutely right! Why that's the most fascinatin' thing I ever heard! I cain't wait to take that logic class!"

The redneck, proud of the new world opening up to him, walked back into the hallway where his friend was still waiting.

"So what classes are ya takin'?" asked the friend.

"Math, history, and logic!" replied the first redneck.

"What in tarnation is logic?" asked his friend.

"Let me give you an example. Do ya own a weed eater?" asked the first redneck.

"No," his friend replied.

"You're queer, ain't ya?"

Frozen carbon a climate change threat

CANBERRA, Australia (UPI) -- An Australian-led team of scientists says it has determined the amount of frozen carbon in Earth's northern regions is more than double previous estimates.

"We now estimate the deposits contain over 1.5 trillion tons of frozen carbon, about twice as much carbon as contained in the atmosphere", said Charles Tarnocai of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the study's lead author.

Pep Canadell, executive director of Australia's Global Carbon Project and study co-author, said the existence of super-sized deposits of frozen carbon means any thawing of permafrost due to global warming might lead to significant emissions of carbon dioxide and methane -- both greenhouse gases.

"Radioactive carbon dating shows that most of the carbon dioxide currently emitted by thawing soils in Alaska was formed and frozen thousands of years ago," University of Florida Professor Ted Schuur said. And that, he noted, demonstrates "how easily carbon decomposes when soils thaw under warmer conditions."

Canadell said permafrost carbon is a wild card in efforts to predict climate change. He said evidence suggests carbon in permafrost is likely to play a significant role in the 21st century's climate.

Carbon in permafrost is found largely in northern regions including Canada, Greenland, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, Scandinavia and the United States.

The research appears in the journal Global Biogeochemical Cycles and was recently published in the journal Nature.

Antacid drugs may lead to dependency

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (UPI) -- Findings of a Danish study suggest the use of proton pump inhibitors can produce acid-related symptoms in healthy adults.

Proton pump inhibitors are a group of drugs used to cause a pronounced and long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production and are among the most widely selling drugs in the world, Wikipedia said.

But results of an eight-week, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial led by Dr. Christina Reimer of Copenhagen University suggests proton pump inhibitors can induce acid-related symptoms in healthy individuals once treatment is withdrawn.

"The observation that more than 40 percent of healthy volunteers, who have never been bothered by heartburn, acid regurgitation or dyspepsia develop such symptoms in the weeks after cessation of PPIs is remarkable and has potentially important clinical and economic implications," Reimer said. "This study indicates unrecognized aspects of PPI withdrawal and is a very strong indication of a clinically significant acid rebound phenomenon that needs to be investigated in proper patient populations."

The research is reported in the journal Gastroenterology.

NASA: Spirit still stuck in Martian sand

PASADENA, Calif. (UPI) -- U.S. space agency engineers said they used backward motion during the second evaluation of maneuvers that might free a stuck Mars rover.

NASA's Mars rover Spirit became trapped in April in loose martian sand. Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineers in California have been using a test rover placed in a specially constructed sandbox to simulate how to best extract Spirit.

During the first evaluation, conducted Monday, the engineers experimented with simply moving the rover forward. That proved unsuccessful when the test unit moved only slightly forward before sliding sideways down a slope.

The second evaluation was conducted Wednesday, but results were not announced.

"Weeks of further testing and analysis are expected before engineers identify the best moves to command Spirit to perform," NASA said in a statement. "Meanwhile, Spirit is using its science instruments to examine the environment surrounding (it) on Mars."

Walking on sand safer than playing in sand

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (UPI) -- U.S. beach goers who play in the sand are at greater risk of diarrhea and gastrointestinal diseases than those who just walk on sand, scientists said.

"Beach sand can contain indicators of fecal contamination," said Chris Heaney, a postdoctoral epidemiology student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Heaney's study showed children run the greatest risk of illness after a day at the beach because they are more likely than adults to dig enthusiastically and get sand in their mouth, the university said in a release Thursday.

Heaney's team gleaned data from more than 27,000 beach goers interviewed between 2003 and 2007 for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency studies, Tim Wade, an EPA epidemiologist said.

"People should not be discouraged from enjoying sand at the beach, but should take care to use a hand sanitizer or wash their hands after playing in the sand," Wade said. "That will make a day at the beach a little less risky."

Dethatching Lawns

Question
: I recently discovered my lawn has thatch. What is the recommended method of dethatching a lawn? Do I do it by hand, or is there some sort of mechanical dethatching tool I can use? Should I aerate before or after I dethatch (or at all)?

Answer: Dethatching is a practice used on mostly warm-season lawns that produce heavy woven mats of stolons or runners. It's done in spring before the lawn gets off to a new start. The steps, in order, are: 1) scalping -- setting the mower as low as it will go and taking the grass to within 1/2 inch of the ground; 2) dethatching -- using a rented machine that rakes the mat of runners right out (hand dethatchers are available but they are not efficient and can wear out the best of us if the lawn is large); 3) aerating -- using a rented piece of equipment that removes small plugs of soil which you then fill in by raking compost across the lawn.

Harvesting Blueberries

For best flavor and sugar content, leave blueberries on the bush an extra 2 to 3 days after they turn blue. Remove small, gray, hard, and shriveled berries. These characteristics suggest the presence of mummy berry disease.

Cocktail Party

At the cocktail party, one woman said to another, "Aren't you wearing your wedding ring on the wrong finger?"

The other replied, "Yes, I am, I married the wrong man."

Burglar

A burglar, needing money to pay his income taxes, decided to rob the safe in a store.

On the safe door he was very pleased to find a note reading: "Please don't use dynamite. The safe is not locked. Just turn the knob."

He did so. Instantly a heavy sandbag fell on him, the entire premises were floodlighted, and alarms started clanging.

As the police carried him out on a stretcher, he was heard moaning: "My confidence in human nature has been rudely shaken."

Ancient volcano caused 10-year winter

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (UPI) -- U.S. scientists said they have determined the eruption of Indonesia's Toba volcano about 74,000 years ago triggered a decade-long severe winter.

Previous studies suggested the massive eruption produced a 1,000-year episode of ice sheet advance, as well as a "volcanic winter," which most likely would have drastically reduced the human population at the time.

To investigate additional mechanisms that might have enhanced and extended the effects of the Toba eruption, Rutgers University Professor Alan Robock and colleagues conducted six climate model computer simulations using state-of-the-art models that include vegetation death effects and stratospheric chemistry feedback that might affect the lifetime of the volcanic cloud.

The researchers said they used a variety of aerosol injection simulations ranging up to 900 times that of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines.

The scientists said none of the models initiated glaciation, but they did produce a decade of severe volcanic winter that would likely have devastated humanity and global ecosystems.

The study that included Georgiy Stenchikov Caspar Ammann, Samuel Levis, Luke Oman and Drew Shindell appears in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres.

Brain topography study may aid diagnoses

CHICAGO (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say they are mapping the dimensions of human brain structures to improve the diagnosis of mental disorders such as schizophrenia.

Northwestern University Professor John Csernansky, who is leading the study sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health, said the research will involve 100 participants, half with early-stage schizophrenia and half who are healthy.

During the two-year study the researchers plan to regularly map participants' brain topography with magnetic resonance imaging. The scientists said differences between schizophrenic and normal brains might allow them to identify schizophrenia during its early stages, and help determine if medicines halt the advance of the disease.

"Understanding what changes in brain structure occur very early in the course of schizophrenia and how medication may or may not affect these structures as time goes by will help us reduce the uncertainty of psychiatric diagnosis and improve the selection of treatments," Csernansky, chairman of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the university's Feinberg School of Medicine, said. "Like every other illness, psychiatric illnesses don't blossom in their full form overnight. They come on gradually. A biomarker of the schizophrenic brain structure would help us define it, especially in cases where the symptoms are mild or fleeting."

SBY Presidenku
